TITLE: Burnout, Exhaustion, and Overwhelm: What My Body Taught Me
Who would have thought that being a high achiever and driven person who wants to do so much to help others could take such a toll on the body? Surely not this girl... but here we are. I do not have life all figured out, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What I do know is that some things help, and that having the right support around me makes me better equipped to navigate whatever comes my way. That is honestly what I want to offer you too.
Over the years, running at full speed and frequently in overdrive has physically taken a toll on me. Not overnight, but slowly, and then all at once. One of the things about working from home is that only the people who love you see the real struggle. Most days you can drag yourself through the bare minimum without anyone else knowing.
But I want to change that, and I want to help you avoid it if possible.
I do not crash as hard or as often now, thanks to better energy management, being more intentional about the projects I say yes to, and the clients I choose to serve. I have had to learn to cancel or delay things occasionally, take a nap when needed, turn away business, change programs, and say no even when I would rather not. And even that is not always foolproof. Just this week, out of nowhere, came three days of exhausting fatigue where I was of little use for anything. Feeling better today, I have to resist the urge to cram three days of work and household chores into one day. Laundry and emails will wait.
This is not a new thing for me. It has been a struggle for a long while, but not one I have shared with many. Thanks to the support I have around this, some days, weeks, and even months are better than others.
My honesty here is to encourage you to listen to your body. We cannot change the past, but we can change today, and that can change tomorrow. What follows are not only gentle reminders for you, my friend, but for me too.
Some things I have learned the hard way:
Do not push yourself to a breaking point. Your physical, mental, and emotional health all need tending, not just one of them.
Do not ignore the signs that your body is asking for a slower pace. It is speaking to you, and it deserves to be heard.
Do not say yes when you mean no because you are worried about disappointing someone. Your boundaries are not an inconvenience.
Do not work with demanding or draining clients, or employers for that matter. You deserve better, and protecting your energy is not selfish.
Do not let anyone tell you to just try harder when you are exhausted. Rest is not a reward you earn. It is something your body requires.
Do not volunteer for everything out of working mom guilt. Showing up fully for a few things is worth more than showing up depleted for all of them.
Do not buy into the hustle culture you see online. Most of it is not real anyway. Focus on your own journey.
Leave time for fun and things that bring you genuine joy. This is not optional.
Leave white space in your calendar on purpose. Stillness is productive even when it does not look like it.
Tell your inner perfectionist and high achiever to take some time off, possibly a long one. Allow yourself to be human and beautifully imperfect.
Take a real lunch break, away from your desk, and with a friend if you can. Connection and rest in the middle of the day matter more than you think.
Go outside. Fresh air and sunlight do something for the nervous system that nothing else quite replicates.
Lie in the grass and look up at the clouds sometimes. It sounds silly until you try it.
Ask for help and be willing to receive it, even when it is not done exactly the way you would do it. Does it really matter how the towels are folded?
And for goodness sake, when you are tired, leave the dishes in the sink and take a nap. Tiredness left unaddressed has a way of becoming something much harder to come back from.
You do not have to figure this out alone.
I have not figured it all out either. But I have learned that having support makes an enormous difference, and that is exactly what I am here to offer. Whether that looks like herbal support to help your body feel steadier, coaching to help you set boundaries and rebuild your energy, or simply having someone in your corner who genuinely gets it, I would love to connect.
