Navigating Peri-Menopause and Menopause
As I get older, I realize that every phase of life brings its own set of challenges, some more obvious than others. As a Gen-Xer, I have more wisdom highlights than I care to mention, along with some aches and pains that seem to appear out of nowhere. And let me tell you, peri-menopause and menopause have shown me just how important it is to have support in place. Someone who understands what you are going through and can be a safe space to help you navigate these changes.
Between managing a business, family, and life's usual demands, I have noticed that stress, sleep issues, and anxiety show up more often than not during this season of life. But I have also learned that with some support from nature and a few wise strategies, this phase does not have to feel like an uphill battle or something you have to navigate in silence.
So if you are going through it right now, or know someone who is, I want you to know that you are not alone. Things can feel easier when we take time to nurture ourselves, even when that feels hard.
The Stress of Transition
Peri-menopause usually begins in your 40s, and menopause follows after your periods stop. While it is an entirely natural transition, it sure does not always feel that way. Fluctuating hormones, hot flashes, mood swings, and sleepless nights can leave you feeling like your body is out of sync. And when you layer in the stress of balancing life, work, and everything in between, it all adds up.
A Word on HRT and Personal Choice
Before I go any further, I want to say something that I think is important: I am not anti-HRT. I use it myself. For many women, hormone replacement therapy is a genuinely supportive tool during this transition, and the decision to use it or not is deeply personal. It is a conversation best had with your healthcare provider, and whatever you decide, that choice deserves to be honored and supported, not judged.
What I believe, and what shapes the way I work, is that herbs, lifestyle support, and holistic coaching can sit beautifully alongside HRT or as a stand-alone approach, depending entirely on what is right for you. My role is not to steer you toward or away from any particular path. It is to help you feel supported, informed, and like yourself again, whatever that looks like for your body and your life.
Gentle Support Whatever Path You Are On
Whether you are using HRT, considering it, or choosing a fully natural approach, there are gentle, nature-based ways to support your body and nervous system through both peri-menopause and menopause. And trust me, they really do make a difference in how you feel day to day.
Sleep Support: Oat Straw and Calming Teas
One thing I hear from clients and friends again and again is how difficult it is to get a good night of sleep during this transition. Hot flashes, racing thoughts, and general restlessness can really disrupt your nights. Waking up at 2am and lying there unable to settle is exhausting in a way that compounds everything else. I know firsthand how frustrating this can be.
Oat straw has been a favorite of mine for a while now. It is a mild, nourishing herb that has traditionally been used to support the nervous system and ease everyday stress. It is not a magic fix, but when used consistently it is a lovely way to help calm the mind and body. I drink a cup or two during the day and find it settling without making me drowsy.
My evening ritual has become a cup of calming tea, and it is something I genuinely look forward to. I like to blend chamomile, lemon balm, and skullcap, herbs that have long been used to support relaxation and a more restful night. It is a small act but it really does shift something.
The Power of Rest and Time in Nature
Rest is everything, and I mean that. Between work and all the things pulling at your time, slowing down can feel impossible. But genuine rest, not just sleep but giving your body space to recharge, is one of the most supportive things you can do for yourself right now. Even something as simple as stepping away from your desk for a real lunch break, or closing your eyes for ten minutes in the afternoon, can make a meaningful difference.
Spending time in nature is one of the best ways I have found to settle my nervous system. Whether it is a walk in the park, sitting in the garden, or simply stepping outside and breathing fresh air, nature has a remarkable way of resetting you. You do not have to do anything other than just be there. That connection to the earth is grounding in a way that is hard to explain but easy to feel. Even in the middle of a city, there are almost always pockets of green to find.
Hot Baths for Deep Relaxation
A hot bath at the end of a long day is one of my favorite forms of self-care, and it is wonderfully simple. Adding calming herbs like lavender or rose petals to your bath, or using Epsom salts which are rich in magnesium and well known for supporting relaxation, can help you release tension and ease both body and mind. A candle, some gentle music, and a hot herbal bath is my go-to on particularly full days. It signals to your body that the day is done and it is time to wind down.
Embracing the Transition
Here is the thing. Peri-menopause and menopause are not problems to be fixed. They are a natural part of life. But that does not mean they do not come with real challenges, and it does not mean you have to white-knuckle your way through them.
The key is finding ways to support yourself during this season, on your own terms, in a way that aligns with your values, your body, and the healthcare decisions you have made for yourself. For some women that means layering herbal and lifestyle support alongside HRT. For others it means a fully nature-based approach. There is no single right answer, and I will never tell you there is. What matters is that you feel supported and that your choices are respected.
You do not have to figure this out alone. If you are in peri-menopause or menopause and feeling overwhelmed, I would love to connect. Supporting women through this transition is one of my greatest areas of passion. Take a look at the ways we can work together and see what feels like the right fit for where you are right now.
Like the women who came before us, we will get through this. And we will do it with a little more ease when we have the right support.
